Question Of The Week

Question of the week: What special traditions do you have to ring in a New Year?

In my family we always eat lentils at midnight. As a matter of fact I have my lentils cooking in my crockpot even as we speak. It is supposed to bring you good luck in the new year.

My husbands family likes to have black eyed peas for good luck and cooked greens for wealth. I can’t stand either one of these so we stick with my tradition!

  1. We are of the black eyed pea variety (I love them! I love lentils too!) My husband says if we use leftover ham from Christmas dinner and make a hearty pot of black eyed peas on New Year’s Day, then we’ll have good luck throughout the year.

Other than that, just staying up until midnight.

I like the leftover Christmas ham thought. I am going to try and make it to midnight!

  2. My husband and I never really had “traditions” for tonight. We’ve always stayed at home. There are to many nuts out tonight so why add two more??? We would sit with the kids and play games. We would change all the clocks in the house to match NY and the ball drop and then the kids would go to bed and we could relax and have a drink just ourselves. They NEVER caught on!! LOL!! Tonight we will have two of the grandchildren so the son and his wife can go out and be the NUTS out. My husband will go pick them up so NO drinking and driving.

Happy New Year to you. I feel fortunate to have met you this year and hope our blogging family continues to survive.

I love the changing the clock trick! I will have to keep that one in my hip pocket!
I have had a blast blogging this past year. I have been fortunate to meet you and several other great people while I in turn play on the computer! What a wonderful world we live in!

  3. Today is a very special day because 30 years ago I gave birth to a wonderful daughter. We will celebrate her birthday tonight with friends and family. So we always have a birthday party on New Year’s Eve. I love the way Joy referred to “our blogging family.” I feel that way too about all my blogging buddies. I love you all and I hope you and your family have a wonderful New Year!!!

What a great way to spend your birthday! Give Sarah a big birthday hug from me! I hope you guys enjoy your party!
    Here’s to a great 2009!

  4. Happy New Year! No real traditions here. We usually go to bed early, even, LOL! Although tonight we’ll be off to a friends house for some festivities, so we’ll see how late we are up. I don’t like lentils, black-eye peas or greens. So I guess I won’t be lucky or wealthy, LOL. ūüėČ

I made it to midnight and crashed right afterwards!

  6. Well…every year before this one to be honest I was probably drunk! Yesterday was 4 months without a sip of alcohol!! So our new tradition is a poker game with our best friends. I won!!

  7. Nikki ~ Congrats on the poker game win and the not drinking win! I have 16 months of being a sober alcoholic so I know what you are talking about! It’s hard but it is so worth it, especially when you have kiddos.
