Gnome Sweet Gnome

Our Gnome

We have a Gnome!

At last, my home has a Gnome! I have been on the Great Gnome search for years now. I would of had one sooner but I am just plain cheap! I found our newest family member for just $3 at our local Hobby Lobby. I guess you could say he is my little clearance Gnome!

My youngest daughter has embraced our little Gnome with open arms. She keeps looking outside at night to see if he comes alive or not! We even went to our local library and checked out a book all about Gnomes. Gnomes are very interesting! If you have time or are just plain bored check out these Gnome Facts.

My oldest daughter on the other hand, is very disturbed about this whole Gnome thing. She ranks Gnomes right up there with clowns! This has only given me more fuel to throw onto the fire! Like I need anymore fuel to throw at her! Every time we walk past the Gnome outside I sing “I ain’t got Gnomebody!” or I say “Ah, Gnome Sweet Gnome!” She does not find my humor very funny but it makes me laugh!

We placed our newest little family member out in our pathetic little flower bed in our backyard. After a day of trying to find him a name my youngest daughter and I, no one else will play along with our little game, have decided to call him Weeder Gnome. I have great hopes that by naming him Weeder he will be nice and weed my poor little flower bed for me! I’ll let you know if he lives up to his name or not!

The Birds

My oldest daughter and I were outside the other day and looked up into a tree where there was a momma bird sitting on a limb with her baby. The momma bird was slapping the baby bird around with her wing.

My daughter said, “That is soo mean! Why would she be doing that to her little baby?”

That’s when the comments came flying out of my mouth!

  • “Maybe the baby bird was tweeting back at his momma.”
  • “Maybe the baby bird was hanging out at that Bird Bath on Jaybird Street!”
  • “Maybe the baby bird was eating illegal bird seed, you know the kind that makes you want to do loop-de-loops instead of flying right!”

I was cracking up and my daughter was just staring at me. My daughter heard my next door neighbor laughing in her backyard so she looked over the fence and yelled “Please don’t encourage her!”

The Heat Is On

I live in Texas and it’s hotter than Hell right now. We have been in the 100’s most of this week. To cool down we have been going to the pool almost every day. It’s sad when you jump into the pool and expect to hit nice cool refreshing water but instead you hit water that is 85 degrees! YUK!

I did find one good thing about it being hotter than Hell: You can leave a cup of coffee in your car while you go shopping and it will still be nice and hot when you come back to it.

What can I say, I’m an optimist!

Question Of The Week

Question of the week: If you could be a kid again for one day this summer, what would you do?

I would have to do two things for sure: Play in the sprinkler for a few hours and chase down the Ice Cream Man.

A Good Little Sailor

Last week my husband, my youngest daughter and I went out fishing on our boat for the day. My oldest daughter claimed she was sick so we let her stay home.

I was not having much luck at catching any keepers. At one point my husband had two keepers in the box and I had zip, Nada, nothing. It was hot and I was getting down right pissed off! My sailor’s mouth was starting to kick in!

My husband hooked another fish and when he started reeling it in I mouthed off, “I suppose you want me to get the damn net again!”

Out of nowhere my youngest daughter, who had been chilling out listening to her music and playing with the live shrimp for most of the day, chimed in with, “Damn it! He got another one! What the hell kind of fish is it this time?”

My husband and I looked at each other and just cracked up!

I guess we are raising a good little sailor!

Question Of The Week

Question of the week: What is your favorite kitchen gadget?

chefgadget.jpg image by fimk

I will openly admit that I have things in my kitchen that I have never, ever used! In my defense most of these unused kitchen gadgets I did not buy myself. I have a cappuccino machine (never used), a bread machine (used very rarely),  vacuum food sealer (used only when we process meat), the list could go on and on!

My favorite kitchen gadget is a cast iron reversible grill griddle that I paid $20 for. It is a little bit of a pain to clean but other than that I love it!

My most used kitchen gadget is what I call a Lazy Husband.

Life’s Little Lessons

I survived! I spent 3 days at the beach with family and I survived! Nobody bled to death, burned, drowned or killed each other! What a great vacation success!

Most of our time was spent either at the beach or at the pool the condo had. I still don’t understand why people go to the beach and end up swimming in a pool all day. Some things in life just don’t make sense to me and that is one of them!

My favorite time was of course at the beach. I could have stayed there forever!

Galveston Beach

I learned a valuable life lesson at the beach: Kids really do listen to what you tell them. I was walking on the beach just ahead of my two daughters when I heard this conversation take place between the two of them:

  • Daughter #2 (who is almost 1o years old): “Why is there white foam in the ocean?”
  • Daughter #1 (who is almost 17 years old), with a very serious look on her face: “That’s Mermaid shampoo!”
  • Daughter #2: “Yeah right! Why does Seaweed always wash up on shore?”
  • Daughter #1: “Everyone knows that’s from when the Mermaids work in their gardens. They pull all of the weeds out of their gardens and let them wash up on shore. Why do you think they call it Seaweed?!”
  • Daughter #2 whining: “Mom, is she telling me the truth?”
  • Me, aka Mom: “Now why would your sister lie to you? Of course it’s true!”
  • Daughter #1: “Just make sure you don’t ask why the water is brown!”

It looks like the student has learned well from the teacher!

Life’s A Beach

We are taking a break and hitting the beach this week! My in-laws have a time share and will be staying at a condo in Galveston this week. The condo sleeps 8 so they have invited us to come stay there for 3 days. My sister-in-law and her 2 boys will be there as well. That brings us up to 9 people in an 8 room condo. I just pray that we survive!

For the next three days I will be doing nothing but eating, playing in the sand and swimming in the ocean. That is it! I figure with the girls being almost 10 and 17 they can fend for themselves. As long as they are not gushing blood it will be all good!

Life’s a Beach and I intend on enjoying it!

This is where we will be staying.

This is the beach access from the condos.

Grocery Shopping Is Not A Man’s Job!

I went to the grocery store Sunday and I was all happy because neither of my girls wanted to come with me! I could get in and get out without having to fight with anyone and not having my bill go up $50 with kid junk!

I guess I have not been grocery shopping on a Sunday in awhile. I am pretty sure I will not go again on a Sunday for quite some time! I swear every wife in the Houston area was punishing her husband by making them go grocery shopping with them last Sunday. You could tell that the poor guys did not want to be there by their sad looking faces that they hung low while pushing the baskets around the store.

You could also tell that other than the beer aisle they had no clue where anything was. One woman told her husband to go get a loaf of bread and then meet her in the frozen aisle. She left and he just stood there. I told him the bread was to his left and the frozen food was at the opposite end of the store. He looked at me with a puzzled look on his face. I must have been talking to him in a foreign language! He finally smiled and said thanks and took off.

Because I had to dodge poor pathetic husbands, my grocery shopping actually took 30 minutes longer than it should have. I think I prefer shopping with the Senior Citizens on Wednesday. At least they smile and let you pass them!

So much for my child-free day of grocery shopping!

A Week Of Milestones

This week has proven to be a week filled with milestones here at my house. I think the big man upstairs is trying to let me know that I am getting older! Not old mind you, just older.

My youngest daughter, who is almost 10, got out of school last week. This week she went to her first Pool Party. There were no boys, but it was still a major deal. She was worried about how she would look in her new swimsuit and if her friends would like it. I told her that she had nothing to worry about and that nobody would actually even notice what her swimsuit looked like. I was right, as all moms are! They ate, swam and just had a blast.

My youngest daughter also got her first bra this week. She was sooo embarrassed as we walked around the store with it in the cart. I was sworn to secrecy about the whole “Bra thing.” I was not allowed to tell her father or her sister. She couldn’t hold it in and she told her sister about. I had to laugh because my oldest daughter said, “Ah, you are growing up!” Dad is still in the dark.

My oldest daughter received her High School Letter Jacket this week. She was awarded the jacket for being in choir and the FFA. She of course had to wear the jacket to school the day after she got it. It didn’t seem to bother her that it was 70 degrees at 6:30 in the morning and she was wearing a jacket! I told her that now she looked like a real High School student.

I also reached a milestone. I have realized that I have two daughters who are growing up right before my eyes and that there is nothing I can do to stop it. Since there is nothing I can do to stop that I am going to sit back and enjoy them as much as possible.

Question Of The Week

Question of the week: When you die, do you want to be buried or cremated? Do you want a big service or just a small one?

In the past year I have been to way too many funerals for my liking. But it has made me step back and think about what I would like to have happen when my time comes.

My mother was very adamant about being cremated and having her ashes spread out by Block Island. I honored that wish, kinda, sorta. We had her cremated but we spread her ashes in New London. I figured she could swim the rest of the way. She would have been laughing right along with me!

My father planned his entire funeral himself. Mainly because none of his kids were talking to him! He had made plans to have his body flown to New Hampshire and he was buried next to his father. He picked out his own casket and headstone. He planned a graveside service and even had military honors planned out.

I have told my kids and husband that I want to be cremated and have my ashes spread by the beach. They can plan the rest. If they want a Mass or a big service for themselves then they can go for it!

It’s Summertime Again

It’s that time of year again… Summertime! If you are a mom you know this summertime math equation: no school + kids = I’m bored!

I experienced the I’m Bored cry this weekend! The first weekend with no more school and they are already starting in, I couldn’t believe it!

I made several suggestions which I thought were pretty good, myself.

  • Go to the pool
  • Wash my car
  • Go blow bubbles
  • Go draw a crime scene on the sidewalk with chalk
  • Go start a game of kickball in the cul-de-sac
  • Have a Lemonade sale
  • Get a job

They did nothing! All weekend they did nothing but watch television and cry out their little I’m Bored battle cry. When does school start?
